NO PLANNED
2009 USS SYLVANIA
REUNION

The Sylvania reunion will be held in 2010, not 2009 due to the national economy.    Reunion response has been low for the past several reunions.  The next reunion will be scheduled in September 2010. The information regarding the 2010 location and dates will be determined within the next couple months.   Future reunions will be held at selected locations rotated around the country.

VOLUNTEERS
1. Volunteers with computers are needed to help in reunion efforts. We need help collecting and setting up e-mail groups, articles for our web page and gathering info from the US Navy - ships history and log books. Also, the reunion needs volunteers who are willing to spend a little time searching for former shipmates. Volunteers will be provided a listing of the ship’s crew (specify years you want to help), cruise books and names of friends etc.

 2. Other volunteers are needed to assist in writing articles either of naval interest or on their Navy careers or civilian life experiences or cruise histories for the future Chatter Newsletters.

 3. Electronic files- We are looking for people to help scan pictures, transfer movies and videos into DVD format to show at reunions and for sale.
Contact John Pierce to volunteer or for further information.

Thank you to Jim Petersen

OPERATING

BUDGET
The success of our reunions depends on our participants and treasury funds.  The treasury is created by dues, donations and sale of Sylvania merchandise.  The reunion dues are only $25 every two years, which is very minimal for the period 1/2009 to 12/2010.   Participants that pay the $25 dues receive the current mailing list and the Chatter Newsletters. The annual costs also support the Sylvania web page. As the treasury permits, we will publish a newsletter (read below) and depend more on the web page for reunion notices, specific reunion information and the Chatter Newsletter.  At the reunions, a registration fee is charged to pay for incidentals, pop, beer and snacks.  People donate raffle items and some are bought so this adds a little operating money.

ACTION: Send
orders and/or payment of
dues.
Make check payable to John D. Pierce.

Items of Interest

A.  CHANGE OF ADDRESS
Send John Pierce change of an address - we are losing more than fifty people each year. We publish and mail out the Chatter to incorrect addresses because we are not notified of Change of Address which is too expensive.  Your help is needed to keep our mailing lists current.

Please send John Pierce new addresses and E-mail addresses.
If you s
hould move your residence,
please notify us in the future.

B. CHATTER NEWSLETTER
We took a lot of extra effort to locate crew members, plus printed and mailed 700 newsletters, but to reduce printing cost and postage we will only send the Chatter to those expressing an interest.  From now on, we will send the Chatter Newsletter  to those responding to the postcard inquiry to be sent late 2009 regarding the 2010 reunion.  During the past several years, approximately 200 people have responded to the mail out postcard announcement requesting information on the next reunion.  We will gather names, addresses and new telephone area codes of former crew members before we send out future Sylvania Chatter Newsletters to them.
